Engineering Futures Program and Scholarship

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University is pleased to offer the Engineering Futures program and scholarship of up to $4,000/year to help offset the costs of obtaining an ASU degree. Contingent upon the Engineering Futures (FSE) program receiving continued funding from donors, the scholarship will be renewed each year.

The aim of the Engineering Futures (FSE) program is to support first-generation-to-university students, those traditionally underrepresented in engineering, and those with financial need to persist in engineering to graduation. A key aspect of becoming an engineer is to develop your engineering identity. Engineering identity is not only developed as you engage in your engineering coursework to build foundational knowledge, but also as you engage in co-curricular and extra-curricular experiences. In order to build your engineering identity, you need to:

1. Successfully navigate the engineering degree—Interact with engineering students who are near peers to understand your degree, what it means to be an engineering student, how to manage your time, how to study and be successful in coursework
2. Do engineering—Apply engineering practices both in-side and outside the engineering classroom
3. Learn about the engineering profession—Interact with engineering professionals and make site visits to engineering workplaces to understand the life of an engineer in industry
4. Actively build your engineering expertise—Build a sense of belonging with the engineering profession and other engineers by taking advantage of the experiential opportunities at FSE (e.g., Design experiences or hack-a-thons offered by Devils Invent, Engineering Projects in Community Service, Undergraduate Teaching Assistant/ Section Leader, Grand Challenges Scholars Program, Peer Tutor, etc).

Selected recipients will be in a cohort of peer scholars for all four years of their undergraduate program and form a supportive self-efficacy network of scholars. This scholarship experience is designed to help you become a successful Fulton Schools of Engineering graduate with strong academic and leadership skills to enhance your expertise in your chosen profession. These scholarships are made possible through the generous support of donors to the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Note: You must be continuously enrolled in an Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) undergraduate program in order to have your scholarship renewed for the next academic year. Any break in enrollment will result in a loss of your scholarship.

Initial award will be made based on the following criteria:

• Enrolled as first-time full-time freshmen in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering in the Fall semester
• Must be United States citizens, permanent residents or resident aliens admitted as refugees
• Demonstrated high academic ability as measured by any combination of high school GPA, SAT/ACT, ALEKS Mathematics Placement Assessment
• Demonstrated unmet financial need based on FAFSA with the ASU Financial Aid and be PELL eligible
• Indicators of intent to persist (stay and graduate) in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering based on application essay responses

Award Amount

Scholarship award amount will be up to $4,000/year to meet unmet financial need. This scholarship will be applied as a payment on current tuition, with one half of the award applied in the Fall semester and the other half in the Spring semester. Funds will be disbursed each semester as long as scholarship requirements are met. Scholarships are subject to cancellation if requirements are NOT met.

Scholarship Recipient Requirements

• Must be continuously enrolled in an Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering undergraduate program as a full-time student.
• Complete “Build your Engineering Future” milestones each semester of the scholarship award. [Note: Upon scholarship award, the milestones for the semester and a timeline for completing them will be made available. This is only available to Engineering Futures scholars.]
• Make academic progress to maintain a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester.
• Interact with an Engineering Futures mentor at least three times a semester.
• Provide feedback to the program each semester by completing 2 surveys (Engineering Identity and Engineering Activity Engagement) and annually through participation in an interview/focus group interview.

Application Process

The Engineering Futures Program and Scholarship application for the 2023-24 academic year is open until October 23, 2023 for students starting as a first-time full-time student in FSE in Fall 2023. In order for your application to be considered you need to have submitted your ALEKS Math Placement score to ASU and have a completed FAFSA application on file at ASU. All communication will be sent to the recipient’s ASU email address.
